Senior Year of High School 1994

For Laura, the news had been the storm that came to break an otherwise perfect day. High school was a rebirth of sorts. She felt renewed, even while her demons still lurked underneath and waited for the perfect moment to burst forth. Laura was given a choice between six different Catholic high schools, and her parents took her to visit each one during her eighth-grade year. She felt like she needed a new place where she could start over, so that is exactly what Laura did. She chose a top school in her area that no one else from middle school would attend. It was a melting pot of sorts, with girls from all over the southern part of the state. It was a girl’s only school. No boy’s allowed.

High school flew by in a blink, and now, she was a week into her senior year. Laura was hanging out with some friends when she got the disturbing upsetting phone call and had let the phone drop from her hand and

crash into the ground. Her entire being felt heavy with sadness upon hearing the unfortunate news from her mother.

“I have some terrible news, honey,” Samantha said on the phone when she called her daughter.

Laura felt too terrified to ask what the terrible news was, but her mother’s sobs fueled her curiosity and interrupted the conversation. Her mother was distraught, and it didn’t take long for Laura to fall back into her seat and await the dreadful news. Unfortunately, her heart neglected its primary function of pumping blood for a moment as it too waited for the inevitably horrible news.

Samantha sniffed even longer and gave a long silence that threatened to quake not just her world but that of her daughter’s as well.

“Mom! What happened!?” An impatient sounding and shaken Laura demanded to know.

Samantha felt the words were too heavy to speak. She cringed and tightened her hand around the telephone before finally whispering, “Your Aunt Penny has died!”

Like the end of a terrible movie too unbelievable to conceive in thoughts, Laura let the phone fall from her hand as she sucked in some air to get her heart and lungs functioning again. Every inch of her body ached, and it didn’t stop as she hurried out from her friend’s house. She decided to head back home upon hearing the news.

Aunt Penny cannot be dead, she thought to herself countless times this must be a mistake.

She had heard nothing about the sweet lady being ill. Although Laura had chosen to cut herself off from her Aunt Penny and Uncle Max since her last visit to the yellow ranch years ago, she saw Susie every day at school last year. Susie started attending the same high school during their junior year.

The news didn’t sit well with her. Laura was in a state of denial until she arrived home. She denied the truth in the words her mother had shared. All of that changed, the moment she saw Samantha in person.
